Find Out How the Company WritesA surefire way of showing youre a good fit for a company is by writing your cover letter in a way that is similar to the content it has written in the past. You can learn how a company writes (i.e., its tone and style) by lookin g at its website - perhaps it has a blog that you can check out to get a better idea.If the company keeps its language formal, then you should too in your cover letter. If its writing is more casual, then consider making your cover letter a little less serious.3. Research the CompanyRead up on the companys history, its goals, and the challenges its facing. This will give you some insight into what its looking for in potential candidates, and you can tailor your cover letter to satisfy the companys needs. As an added bonus, you can demonstrate your newfound knowledge in the interview to earn some brownie points. Not sure what to ask in the interview? Demonstrate That Youre a Cultural FitCompanies increasingly prefer to hire people who fit into their corporate culture. Many companies websites contain a page about their corporate cultures, like this example from GlaxoSmithKline, a prominent British pharmaceutical research companyThe lefthand article in this screenshot shows that GlaxoSmithKline values honesty, while the righthand article highlights their dedication to their work.By checking out these pages, you can ensure that a companys culture speaks to you. Plus, you can use the information to show youre a cultural fit in your cover letter. Then, read about the companys values on their about-us page, and be sure to mention them in your cover letter if they align with your own.You can also explore the profiles of a companys current employees, and pick up on the tone they use to describe themselves. Is it quirky? Serious? Casual? These clues can inform you what voice to use in your cover letter. You can even take a look at a companys Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts to get a feel for its style. Finally, think back through your past projects, and mention any that sound similar to the projects youd likely be working on with the new company. Doing so will show the hiring manager that youd be able to hit the ground running.11. Dont Write Im Writing to Apply for Position NameThis phrase is an overused, borderline cliche cover-letter opening. The best cover letters use a creative opening. So, perhaps you can mention something you read in the news about the company that impressed you. Or explain where your passion for the companys product (or service) came from. A short anecdote like this also has the advantage of giving them an insight into your personality. In this example, the applicant states that they read about the school in the local newspaper, which indicates that they do their research, care about their local community, and have a good memory for the schools successes. These are all good characteristics for a teacher.12. Avoid ClichsThe world of job applications is full of clichs and corporate buzzwords, so avoid describing yourself as self-motivated or a go-getter because doing so wont set you apart from any of the other hundreds of job seekers. And nothing screams unoriginality more than proudly proclaiming that you think outside the box, which most applicants will claim somewhere on t heir letter.Recruiters have heard it all before - multiple times a day. Thus, aim for originality. After all, nothing says youd bring a new approach to the role than a creative cover letter.13. Pepper Action Verbs Throughout Your Cover LetterAction verbs help you show leadership, talent, and initiative in the way you performed your duties at previous companies.Compare the following exampleshonigwein with representatives of other companies to improve relationships.Cultivated relationships with representatives of other companies.Cultivated is a better choice than met because it shows you had a much more active role in forming and maintaining relationships with other businesses. Met simply implies that you were present in meetings but doesnt reveal how you accomplished anything. For more effective (and job-landing) actions verbs, weve put together the longest action verb list in the universe.14. Mention the Job TitleDespite the advice in Tip No. 11, you should mention which role youre se eking somewhere in your cover letter. After all, the hiring manager might be filling several positions. If youre sending your application by email, include the job title in the subject (e.g., Vanessa Mateo - Makeup Artist). On the other hand, if youre sending out a physical copy of your application, you can put the job title on its own line before the greetingRE Application for Automotive Technician15. Employ a Call-To-ActionA call-to-action does exactly what you would think - it calls on someone to act. In the case of a cover letter, youre calling on the hiring manager to contact you. Give them an open invitation to get in touchPlease feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience. And repeat your phone number and email address here so that the hiring manager doesnt have to search for itI can be reached at 415-253-1470 or HarveyCastrogmail.com.Dont use more than one email address and one phone number on your application. Otherwise, youll confuse the hiring manager.Finalizing Y our Cover Letter Guidelines SuggestionsKey to a good cover letter are the details ensure youve checked for consistency and have proofread it several times.16. Keep It to a Single Page MaxHiring managers are pressed for time, and they have no intention of reading a multi-page cover letter. Keep yours to one page. But dont fill the page 300500 words is about the sweet spot.Ever wondered exactly how long a cover letter should be? We answer that age old question and more in our in-depth guide to cover letter length.17. Write Numbers ConsistentlyThe rules on how to write numbers are simple numbers between one and nine should be spelled out. Anything above 10 should be typed in numerals.Remember to add a comma after every third number from the right to make them easier to read (e.g., 1,701 and 2,047).18. Use an Eye-Catching Postscript (P.S.)Over 90% of readers read the P.S. before the letter because its short and digestible. You can use this fact to your advantage by summarizing why youd be a great fit at the company in your P.S.Heres an exampleP.S. Im looking forward to discussing how I achieved a 17% decrease in customer complaints with you.19. Pick a Suitable FontWriting a cover letter is not the time to get adventurous with your font selections. Stick to a widely accepted font style, such as Times New Roman or Arial.Dont go below a 12-point font size either. Otherwise, the hiring manager will strain their eyes trying to read your application (which will not leave a good impression). Our tips on resume font styles and sizes also apply to cover letters.20. Clarify Your AbbreviationsYou may have used a particular abbreviation so much in a previous role that using it has become second nature. But dont assume that everyone will understand it. Luckily, theres an easy fix dont use abbreviationsThis is particularly vital in complex industries, like law, IT, or medicine, where LLD might mean late-life depression or leg length differential()21. Proofread, Proofread, Proof read (Then Proofread Again)Youd be surprised how easily a typo can slip into your cover letter. To catch them all, you need to go through your cover letter not just once, but several times. And enlist the help of a friend to proofread it again.Long sentences will make the hiring managers brain switch off, so avoid them.If you tend to use complex words instead of plain, simple language, use Readable or Hemingway, which will tell you if your text is hard to read.Long sentences will make the hiring managers brain switch off, so avoid them.ConclusionThese tips are sure to turbocharge your cover letter and your overall application. Talent Acquisition In The New Year Are You Ready

Talent Acquisition In The New Year Are You ReadyWe just started 2017, but its clear we need to prepare for a lot of changes coming this year. This is especially true in talent acquisition. According to ManpowerGroup, 40 percent of companies worldwide had trouble filling jobs last year. In order to make this year better, you can expect there to be a lot of new trends impacting how we hire employees this year. But how can you know what adjustments to make before its too late? Should you be focusing on employer branding like last year? Or is it time to revisit your quality of hire metrics? If you want to stay ahead of 2017s talent acquisition trends, check out the insights and tips these hiring experts have to offerSaving timeTime pressure is intensifying and rapidly growing companies are looking for efficiency tools. Hiring managers, recruiters, and applicants are under enormous time constraints for interviewing. One of my startup clients is doubling in 2017 and hiring mora than 100 peopl e across the United States in the next few months. They have integrated video interviewing into their recruitment process. They use it to screen candidates prior to a formal call with the hiring manager. Because its a video interview, everyone can use the technology on their own time. Hiring managers can review videos at 10 p.m. if they want. And candidates can shoot the video on the weekend or after hours so the interview wont interfere with their current job. Since my client is recruiting across the U.S., this tool has saved them thousands of dollars in travel expenses and hours of time. So far, everyone theyve loved on video, theyve loved in person.Sonja Hastings, Software Sales Recruiter, Optimal Sales SearchWant to have a better hiring process in 2017? Find ways to save time. recruiting sonhastingsClick To TweetCreative questionsUse open-ended questions. Instead of tell me about your strengths, try new questioning where you have to challenge candidates to take a step back and t hink. Study how they answer and see what insights you learn. Look for someone who will be great for the long-term and not jusy for the short-term.Monica H. Kang, Founder and CEO, InnovatorsBoxTraditional jobinterview questions wont cut it in 2017, says monicahkang.Click To Tweet Embrace transparencyThe biggest trend thats continuing to grow from the candidate side is transparency. Job seekers have mora access to data now than ever before. They are able to look up a companys rating, possible interview questions, and salary data. To cope with this increase in transparency, employers should focus on increased transparency. Be more upfront with candidates about expectations and salary range. Also, pay close attention to how your employees are rating you, and consider asking your employees to leave reviews on sites like Glassdoor.Angela Copeland, Career Coach, Copeland Coaching Top talenttrend of 2017? Transparency according to CopelandCoachClick To Tweet Succession planningThe greatest trend in talent acquisition is succession planning or pathways. So, what is succession planning? As companies continue their search for qualified candidates, they are hindering themselves by not focusing on training and investing in the employees they already have. For example, if a company has a cashier that has been working for a couple of years, does his job very well, fits in with the company culture, and has growth potential, it would be far more beneficial for companies to invest in promoting him instead of hiring someone from the outside for a managerial position. While the outsider may have more managerial experience, they come in with a different set of techniques, beliefs, and a way of doing things. It could be costly to get someone who already is getting paid a higher salary to learn how your company does things rather than give a loyal employee managerial training.Gisel Malek, absatzwirtschaft Coordinator, ProSkyDont invest in hiring, invest in employeedevelopment. ProSk yersClick To Tweet Big Data Because big data is securing an increasing foothold in every industry, employers are vying to stay competitive and stretch their investments as much as possible. With technology at the forefront of how hiring is done, companies find themselves prioritizing the onboarding of data scientists, mobile designers, and data engineers in order to update their branding and image. Trying to predict which sources yield the best hires and results overall is mostly responsible for this trend. The most efficient way of doing this is with big data that can analyze trends and identify patterns so that companies are better able to funnel their dollars and marketing resources toward whatever is working best.Stephanie Troiano, Executive Recruiter, The Hire TalentBigData can help you hire better this year if you know how to use it. thehiretalentClick To TweetWhat are some other talent acquisition trends to look out for in 2017? 4 ways to cope with the early sunsets of winter

4 ways to cope with the early sunsets of winter 4 ways to cope with the early sunsets of winter At the start of my workday, everything seemed fresh and new. Even though it was cold outside, the sunshine cast a dewy glow on everything in sight - the big buildings and river views outside,  and maybe even some of my questions about how the day could play out.But after working in a room  with no windows for a couple hours before returning to my desk mid-afternoon (bad idea), I realized, yet again, that it’s really happening. Hazy clouds are the only thing looming outdoors now: With  winter upon us, we’ve reached the time of year when it gets dark super early. That being said, this tweet  was particularly scary:But all isn’t lost: Here’s how to make it through the cold, dark, depressing winter months with your spirit intact.Work against SAD by enjoying the sunlightKnown as “seasonal affective disorder,” Mayo Clinic defines this as “a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons - SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you’re like mos t people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer.”While there are reportedly a variety of treatment options, medical and otherwise,  Mayo Clinic recommends  exercising regularly and heading into the great outdoors as possible options, by doing things like having lunch in a park, walking and soaking up the sunshine on a bench. So instead of doing what I did this morning, consider working by a window letting in natural light and taking the time for a walk around the block.Press playListen to some familiar sounds.Alyse Kalish, an Associate Editor for The Muse, writes about how music and podcasts can help you get through a dark winter.“If you’ve been listening to the buzz of silence and other people packing up their bags, you’re probably starting to go crazy- and the lack of light sure isn’t helping. Right now, I want you to try p utting on some music (or, if you can, a podcast) to jolt your brain back into work mode. Plus, the noise will prevent you from dosing off when the darkness is just that soothing,” Kalish writes.Set your eyes on new prizesJacquelyn Smith features advice from Ned Russell, managing director of Saatchi Saatchi Wellness, in Forbes.“The wintertime is ideal for focusing on new projects, Russell says. Even if you’re feeling a bit sluggish, set new goals and volunteer for a new assignment that excites you. Your initiative will not only give you a sense of accomplishment and make you more productive, but it will most likely impress your boss,” Smith writes.Winter can be a time of renewed passion and curiosity.Spend time with the people you miss the mostBetween long commutes, packed work schedules, and weekend appointments, it can be  easy to lose touch with old friends you haven’t seen in a while, making them seem even further away than they might be location-wise.But hopefully, yo u can pick up right where you left off, bringing back a flood of old memories as you make new ones. Just because it’s cold and dark out doesn’t mean you have to be alone - or let your friendships suffer.Remember that when the sun goes down, your motivation doesn’t have to go with it.

How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet

How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet Have you posted your resume online somewhere but forgotten about it? If so, you might want to find any copies and either update or remove them. It may seem like a difficult task if you’re not someone who spends hours and hours online. Here’s how to find and remove your resume from the internet. Having your resume online may not be that big a deal to you, but if your boss runs across it he or she may get the impression that you’re looking for another job. There may also be various privacy and security concerns when your personal information is floating around online. How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet If you dont remember any of the places you have posted, removing your resume isnt quite as easy as you might think. So, for future reference, when youre job searching, its a good idea to make a list of all the sites you are using. Keep track of all your usernames and passwords, and dont use the same ones for job sites as you do for your personal logins. Even better, create a  new email account  to use just for your job search. Use that email address for all your career-related accounts and keep a list of your passwords. Again, dont use the same password as you use for your personal accounts. It will not only be easier to keep track of your correspondence, but it will also help you protect your privacy and  avoid identity theft. If you do have a list of the sites where you have registered and login information, you should be able to remove or make your resume private so its not viewable by employers. When You Dont Remember Where You Posted It If you dont have a list and/or dont remember where you posted your resume, the more important copies to remove are those that show up publicly. To find them, search Google by your name and the word resume. If you posted your resume so anyone can view it, it should show up. You can also search a bit more specifically and include some keywords that you know are on your resume. For example, search Google for your name, job title, and company. Another way to check where you have posted online is to go back through your old email messages. You should have received a confirmation email when you set up an account on the job board. You may also have received email messages from prospective employers. When you find an account you created, you will be able to log in and delete your resume or make it private so its not visible to employers. If you don’t find any copies of your resume, you’re probably in the clear, but be sure to keep track of all job search activity going forward. Make Your Resume Private If you found copies of your resume on the internet, you may be able to hide them without totally deleting them. With some job sites, especially those that have a networking component, you may want to leave your resume online, but limit who can see it. Check the privacy settings. You may be able to change your resumes visibility from public to limited or private. How to Delete Your Resume If you’ve decided that you do want your resume deleted, log in to the sites where you posted it and delete or remove your resume. If you dont remember your usernames and passwords, follow the instructions on the page for retrieving a forgotten username or a lost password. It only takes a few minutes to fix, but note that you’ll also need to know what email you used when you created the job site accounts. Once you’ve logged into the site, you should be able to find a link to your resume and it should be easy to delete. If you can’t figure it out, look for a “Help” link where you can search for instructions, or a “Contact Us” page and send a message to the website’s support team who can help you delete your resume. Update Your Account Information While you are checking around for your resume, take the time to update your online career-related accounts. You never know when you might need them in the future. If you have a  LinkedIn profile  take the time to update it with your latest employment information. If you an  online version of your resume, and you want to keep the account, take the time to make sure that all the information is current.

18 words and phrases smart people never include on their resumes

18 words and phrases smart people never include on their resumes 18 words and phrases smart people never include on their resumes While it can be tempting to load a bunch of jargon and glowing language on your resume, there are certain terms and phrases that you should avoid. So, without further ado:Don’t use these 18 words and phrases on your resumeBack away slowly…1) Go-getterDo you really think that bragging is the way to a recruiter’s heart?   A 2014 CareerBuilder survey of HR and hiring supervisors found that 27% chose this word as one to steer clear of.  2) Team playerOk, isn’t that your job? This isn’t doing very much in the evidence department. The same CareerBuilder survey found that 15% picked this word as a no-go.  3)  SynergyThis is on our list of annoying work phrases  for a reason. And the same CareerBuilder survey found that 22% chose this word as a bad option.4) Thought leadershipThis features such awkward, vague wording. A Grammarly blog post features this word on its list of ones to avoid.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Sign up for  Morning Motivation! It’s our friend ly Facebook ?   that will send you a quick note every weekday morning to help you start strong. Sign up here by clicking Get Started!5) SeasonedThis word also shows up in the Grammarly blog post: “‘Show, don’t tell’ is the golden rule.”  6) Highly qualifiedAgain, you should let your resume speak for itself. A Robert Half blog post says you shouldn’t use this word on yours, for just that reason. If you’re actually highly qualified, that will come through - saying it may be considered evidence that you are actually not.  7)  LoyalThis one on the MediaBistro list also looks like you’re bragging, but not in a good way.  Mitchell Langbert, associate professor of business management at Brooklyn College, told MediaBistro that the words on this list are used too frequently.  8)  Value addWhat? This is dense jargon that doesn’t explain how you contributed to professional efforts, and is featured on the  MediaBistro list.  9) Go-to-personMediaBistro features this word, whic h is conversational enough, but doesn’t illustrate what you’re trying to communicate in concrete terms.  10) Bottom-lineMediaBistro also features this word, which is pure jargon.  11) Hard-workingIf you’re really hard-working, your resume will reflect this.A FlexJobs post by Kat Boogaard features this word. She writes: “Hiring managers are going to bank on the fact that - if you get the job - you’re going to roll up your sleeves and put your all into it. There’s no need to explicitly state that on your resume.”  12) Detail-orientedMonster Senior Editor Charles Purdy features this in the publication, writing that this should be a given. And that’s true. This isn’t something you should have to state on your resume.  13)  ProactiveThis is also featured in Monster, and Purdy writes that your resume should demonstrate this without you having to say it.  14) On timeGlassdoor features this in a post because this is also something that is simply not impressive. It should be a given.  15) Can’t or won’tGlassdoor’s post shows that these words won’t draw the right kind of attention to your resume.  16) Due to the fact that…Chrissy Scivicque, a career coach, writer, trainer, and author of EatYourCareer.com, writes in U.S. News World Report that this phrase, along with others, fall into the category of “too many words,” and that you should write “because” or “and” instead.  17) ObsessiveA LinkedIn post by author, speaker, and business, technology, and data expert Bernard Marr mentions that this isn’t a good word to use because it isn’t actually positive.Including it could also make you seem like an office martyr.  18) IntelligentThe same LinkedIn post illustrates that this doesn’t make you look good, and that there’s a difference between “being” this way and “saying” that you are.Have enough confidence in your ability to show the recruiter your smarts in other ways.More from Ladders

Office Politics - Get Ahead Without Playing Dirty

Office Politics - Get Ahead Without Playing Dirty Office Politics - Get Ahead Without Playing Dirty The term office politics is usually associated with the concept of getting ahead at work by using cut-throat tactics. Another way of looking at it, however, makes it seem a bit less unsavory. Rather than thinking of office politics as climbing the corporate ladder by stepping on other peoples hands on the rungs below,  we can instead define it as advancing in ones career by knowing how to navigate an organizations political structure gracefully. Dont Play Dirty Using office politics to trample people will cause nothing but strife in your workplace. Playing dirty to get ahead will irritate your coworkers, leaving you isolated, and it is nearly impossible to do your job without your coworkers support. Even if its possible to make it to the top, no one will be there to enjoy it with you. It is entirely unnecessary- and self-defeating- to play dirty. Putting all your energy into using underhanded tactics to get ahead will cause you to lose focus on doing your job well. It will be almost impossible to accomplish anything worthwhile and will diminish your opportunity to impress your boss. Rather than using energy to dream up cut-throat ways to get ahead at work, instead use it to learn some rules that will help you make the best of office politics. Rules for Using Office Politics Make sure to understand your organizations formal and informal hierarchies. While every entity has an official organizational chart, there is also an unofficial structure at play. For example, according to the written chain of command, the vice president in charge of your division may appear to make all the decisions. In reality, it may be her second in command who does.Apprise higher-ups of your accomplishments. Often people are afraid to toot their own horns because it feels like they are bragging. However, if you dont let those who are in charge know about what youve been doing, who will? When it comes time for them to make decisions about who to promote, they should know who you are and what you have contributed to the companys bottom line. Also, be congenial and congratulate your coworkers on their achievements. Be kind to your bosss administrative assistant or secretary. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it can also affect your success. He or she has the power to grant access to your boss and may have influence over some of his or her decisions.Respect your coworkers. Like you, most of the people with whom you work want to do a good job. A pleasant environment makes it easier for everyone to achieve their goals as well as the organizations goals. When employees work together, it does more for an employers bottom line than when individual workers look out only for their own best interests. Learn how to deal with annoying coworkers. There are a variety of personality types in every workplace and, unfortunately, not all are going to be pleasant. Knowing how to deal with even the most difficult colleagues will make your life easier and help you avoid trouble.Never spread gossip, but pay attention to everything you hear. While some of it will be false, quite a few things will be accurate, or at least have a grain of truth to them. Dont act on anything until you know it is true, but have a strategy in the works. Avoid becoming the subject of gossip at work. It can damage your reputation and, subsequently, your career, if your boss makes decisions based on it. Keep personal information to yourself, or at least dont share it with anyone who is untrustworthy.Dont offend anyone by discussing controversial topics. Among these topics are religion and politics.Lose your negative attitude at work. Instead of complaining about problems, find ways to fix them. Bring your valid complaints, along with your suggestions for how to make improvements, to those who have the power to make a change. It will allow your superiors to see you as a proactive employee instead of one who complains just for the sake of complaining.

There is not just one normal way to retire from work

There is not just one normal way to retire from work There is not just one normal way to retire from work Why be normal, you might have asked yourself on occasion. Turns out, with retirement at least, there’s really no such thing. What you might think of as the “normal” way of retiring - leaving full-time work at a traditional retirement age and never working again - isn’t that common after all. Only 37% of U.S. workers retire from a full-time job and stay retired, according to a recent study, focused on people in their mid-50s through age 71, by the Rand Corporation, a nonprofit research organization.Meanwhile, about 14% of people “retire” to a part-time job. Another 17% quit their full-time job and retire, only to return to the workforce some time later, according to the study, which was based on data on 2,920 people who were surveyed over 14 years by the University of Michigan’s national Health and Retirement Study.About 26% of people continue to work, either full time or part time, past age 70, the study found.“In the U.S., nontraditional paths are very common - onl y around a third of people are doing this traditional retirement,” says Peter Hudomiet, an associate economist at the Rand Corporation and co-author of the report.Rick Kahler, a certified financial planner and founder of Kahler Financial Group in Rapid City, South Dakota, isn’t surprised by the findings.“I’ve had clients quit and go back in two years,” Kahler says. “They get bored. At first it’s usually great because it’s like being on vacation, but for some people that’s not really sustainable. Ultimately, a person that goes back probably didn’t visualize or think through fully what retirement would be like.”In other cases, a significant life event - such as a spouse’s death - or financial difficulties might play a part in people returning to the workforce.Personality plays a partThe study also looked at whether our personalities might affect our retirement decisions. A clear link was found between being extroverted and staying in the workforce longer, in a part-time job, even after controlling for other factors.“We saw that extroverts were more likely to work longer, but only in part-time jobs,” Hudomiet says. (The Health and Retirement Study asks people to self-report their personality type, based on responses to a series of questions.)Of course, many different factors go into determining how and when we retire. The three strongest predictors of people taking the traditional retirement path, Hudomiet says, are: Wealth. The more money you have, the earlier you will retire, on average. Health. If you have health issues, you’re more likely to retire and not return to work. A traditional pension. People with old-school pensions are likelier than others to retire and not return to work. What this means for your retirement outlookUnfortunately, no study is going to forecast your future retirement path for you. But this research shows how various factors can affect retirement timing. Here are some steps you can take to determine your retirement timeline:Check up on your savings. While there are lots of nonfinancial questions to consider before you retire, it’s also true - obviously - that finances are a huge factor in how and when you’ll retire. See if you’re on track with a retirement calculator.Know what you want. Retirement is about a lot more than just money. Before you retire, figure out your goals and plans. “Actually write out what you will be doing,” Kahler says. “What would a normal day, a normal week, a normal month look like? This forces someone to actually put pen to paper as to how a day looks.” Read more about retirement planning at any age.Talk with your spouse. It sounds obvious, perhaps, that you’d talk about retirement with your part ner. But Kahler says one of the biggest hurdles for couples is when one spouse is suddenly home all the time. “People make assumptions without gathering the facts,” he says. “What is the other person thinking? Do they even think the spouse will be home all day? Does the spouse assume something else? Does the spouse even know they’re serious about retiring?” Talk together about how life is going to look when one or both of you is retired.Consider backup plans. You might plan to work full time until age 70, but what if you change your mind down the road, or your health deteriorates to the extent that you can’t work anymore? One idea is to trim expenses now so you can hike your savings rate and improve your retirement outlook. Other potential backup plans include moving to a less-expensive locale in retirement, taking out a reverse mortgage, or figuring out other ways to cut costs or boost income, such as taking in a roommate.Prepare for major change. Retirement is “a big deal,” Kahler says. “Some people are really ready and handle it fine, but most people find the adjustment a little more daunting than they imagined,” he says. “We tell people: Start preparing two or three years before.”Andrea Coombes is a writer at NerdWallet. An Overview of Major U.S. Brick-and-Mortar Bookstores

An Overview of Major U.S. Brick-and-Mortar Bookstores An Overview of Major U.S. Brick-and-Mortar Bookstores Brick-and-mortar bookstores are booksellers that have a physical retail presence, whether a freestanding building or a store in a shopping mall.   Brick-and-Mortar  Bookstores Are  Important to Book Marketing For centuries, bookstores  were the main centers of commerce for the bookselling industry and book-buying public. Now, while some consumer dollars have shifted away from print books to e-books, bookstores remain hubs for those who like the feel of holding a book in their hands and browsing the stacks to see before they buy. Therefore, despite Amazon.coms domination of online retail bookselling and digital book sales, bookstores remain a critical player in the book publishing industry. Below are the major bookstores in the United States. Brick-and-mortar stores promote books in numerous ways, including:   Author readings and signingsPromotional signage  Point-of-purchase promotion, such as newsletters, bookmarks and bagsOn-table promotion - these feature  seasonal, holiday or category-specific books.Endcap promotions - these are the books displayed thematically at the end of a row of books.  Handselling - that is, when the staff at a bookseller personally recommends a book to a customer. Note that many of these promotions are funded by the publisher by way of cooperative advertising funds.   Major Bookstore Chains The major bookstore chains are especially important to publishers and authors for their potential ability to buy and sell large quantities of new books and to stock backlist sellers, as well as their ability to promote books to the book-buying public through chain-wide bookstore promotions. Barnes Noble   The chain, started by Len Riggio when he was still a college bookstore manager, is arguably the largest and most forward-thinking chain bookseller in the nation. Early in its history, Barnes Noble differentiated itself with a number of bookselling innovations including television advertising, “value” pricing, publishing proprietary books and deep discounting of bestsellers. It has remained on the forefront of bookselling in all its iterations, including online and with e-books thanks to the Nook e-reader. The Barnes Noble Bookseller chain operates approximately 630 brick-and-mortar retail bookstores in regional shopping malls, major strip centers and freestanding locations. Starting in 2016, BN began to further leverage the power of its brick-and-mortar stores by offering promotional inclusion for self-published books that hit a certain threshold of BN  ebook sales.   Books-A-Million   Books-A-Million (or BAM, as it is often referred to) is based in Birmingham, Ala., and operates approximately 260 stores in 32 states. The chain was founded in 1917 as a street corner newsstand in Florence, Ala., Since the closing of the Borders Group bookstore chain, it has been the second largest brick-and-mortar book retailer in the United States. Border’s Group The acknowledged originator of the book “superstore” concept and once the second-largest bookstore chain in the U.S., the Borders Group was a publicly held bookstore chain that operated Borders superstores and Waldenbooks Specialty Retail segment stores. This includes Waldenbooks, Borders Express and Borders airport stores. Lagging behind on the digital revolution, the last Borders store closed in Sept. 2011. Major Independent Bookstores Major brick-and-mortar booksellers arent limited to bookstore chains. Throughout the United States, there are a number of major independent booksellers, most with one or a few outlets, too few or too localized to be considered “chain bookstores.” These independents booksellers are influential in the publishing industry not only because of their ability to move quantities of books relative to many other independent bookstores, but because of their great reputations in their respective communities, the loyalty of their customer base and the business savvy of their ownership, who have continued to be committed to bookselling through a tough and volatile business landscape. Some major independents in the United States include: Book Soup in West Hollywood, Calif.Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle, Wash.Square Books in Oxford, Miss.Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Kentucky and OhioNorthshire Bookstore in Sarasota Springs, N.Y.Powell’s Books in Portland, Ore.R. Ideas, Formulas and Shortcuts for What to Write in Email when Sending Resume and Cover Letter

Ideas, Formulas and Shortcuts for What to Write in Email when Sending Resume and Cover Letter When you're requested to email your work application to a company, you may either copy and paste your cover letter into the body of your email, or you'll be able to attach it like a file, together with your resume. Though it's quick and simple to send an email, it doesn't signify you need to write anything under a comprehensive cover letter focused on why you are a superb match for the job you're applying for. How you include a cover letter is dependent on just what the job posting instructions were. The cover letter is going to be the very first impression and must be the personal touch that causes the fact based resume. Bear in mind, the trick to a fantastic cover letter is personalization. A specialist cover letter should adhere to a very clear cover letter format. You should get your cover letter before the folks that are doing the hiring. Sending your work application to a prospective employer by email isn't complicated. Double check you've included all of the appropriate attachments before you send the email. Frequently, employers might ask you to follow instructions so that they can see and answer the email, others might be testing you will read and finish the instructions properly. They receive tons of emails a day, and many times, whether or not an email gets opened depends entirely on its subject line. To begin with, before you begin drafting your letter, be certain your email address is professional. Be mindful concerning the time you decide to send your resume email. There are steps that you may take to make your resume email stick out from the rest. The email you send is the v ery first thing they see so that it is very important to receive it right. Also, avoid using HTML as you don't know whether the employer will have the ability to see it. A resume is basically a list of accomplishments and obligations. A good suggestion is to send the email to someone you recognize first to look at your formatting works properly. Next ensure use of good resume keywords. Adhering to any instruction given in the description will present your resume the very best possibility of reaching the correct recipient. Yet another tip, always remember to create your whole job application relevant and specific to the job that you're attempting to land.
