4 ways to cope with the early sunsets of winter
4 ways to cope with the early sunsets of winter 4 ways to cope with the early sunsets of winter At the start of my workday, everything seemed fresh and new. Even though it was cold outside, the sunshine cast a dewy glow on everything in sight - the big buildings and river views outside, and maybe even some of my questions about how the day could play out.But after working in a room with no windows for a couple hours before returning to my desk mid-afternoon (bad idea), I realized, yet again, that itâs really happening. Hazy clouds are the only thing looming outdoors now: With winter upon us, weâve reached the time of year when it gets dark super early. That being said, this tweet was particularly scary:But all isnât lost: Hereâs how to make it through the cold, dark, depressing winter months with your spirit intact.Work against SAD by enjoying the sunlightKnown as âseasonal affective disorder,â Mayo Clinic defines this as âa type of depression thatâs related to changes in seasons - SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If youâre like mos t people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer.âWhile there are reportedly a variety of treatment options, medical and otherwise, Mayo Clinic recommends exercising regularly and heading into the great outdoors as possible options, by doing things like having lunch in a park, walking and soaking up the sunshine on a bench. So instead of doing what I did this morning, consider working by a window letting in natural light and taking the time for a walk around the block.Press playListen to some familiar sounds.Alyse Kalish, an Associate Editor for The Muse, writes about how music and podcasts can help you get through a dark winter.âIf youâve been listening to the buzz of silence and other people packing up their bags, youâre probably starting to go crazy- and the lack of light sure isnât helping. Right now, I want you to try p utting on some music (or, if you can, a podcast) to jolt your brain back into work mode. Plus, the noise will prevent you from dosing off when the darkness is just that soothing,â Kalish writes.Set your eyes on new prizesJacquelyn Smith features advice from Ned Russell, managing director of Saatchi Saatchi Wellness, in Forbes.âThe wintertime is ideal for focusing on new projects, Russell says. Even if youâre feeling a bit sluggish, set new goals and volunteer for a new assignment that excites you. Your initiative will not only give you a sense of accomplishment and make you more productive, but it will most likely impress your boss,â Smith writes.Winter can be a time of renewed passion and curiosity.Spend time with the people you miss the mostBetween long commutes, packed work schedules, and weekend appointments, it can be easy to lose touch with old friends you havenât seen in a while, making them seem even further away than they might be location-wise.But hopefully, yo u can pick up right where you left off, bringing back a flood of old memories as you make new ones. Just because itâs cold and dark out doesnât mean you have to be alone - or let your friendships suffer.Remember that when the sun goes down, your motivation doesnât have to go with it.

How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet
How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet Have you posted your resume online somewhere but forgotten about it? If so, you might want to find any copies and either update or remove them. It may seem like a difficult task if youâre not someone who spends hours and hours online. Hereâs how to find and remove your resume from the internet. Having your resume online may not be that big a deal to you, but if your boss runs across it he or she may get the impression that youâre looking for another job. There may also be various privacy and security concerns when your personal information is floating around online. How to Remove Your Resume from the Internet If you dont remember any of the places you have posted, removing your resume isnt quite as easy as you might think. So, for future reference, when youre job searching, its a good idea to make a list of all the sites you are using. Keep track of all your usernames and passwords, and dont use the same ones for job sites as you do for your personal logins. Even better, create a new email account to use just for your job search. Use that email address for all your career-related accounts and keep a list of your passwords. Again, dont use the same password as you use for your personal accounts. It will not only be easier to keep track of your correspondence, but it will also help you protect your privacy and avoid identity theft. If you do have a list of the sites where you have registered and login information, you should be able to remove or make your resume private so its not viewable by employers. When You Dont Remember Where You Posted It If you dont have a list and/or dont remember where you posted your resume, the more important copies to remove are those that show up publicly. To find them, search Google by your name and the word resume. If you posted your resume so anyone can view it, it should show up. You can also search a bit more specifically and include some keywords that you know are on your resume. For example, search Google for your name, job title, and company. Another way to check where you have posted online is to go back through your old email messages. You should have received a confirmation email when you set up an account on the job board. You may also have received email messages from prospective employers. When you find an account you created, you will be able to log in and delete your resume or make it private so its not visible to employers. If you donât find any copies of your resume, youâre probably in the clear, but be sure to keep track of all job search activity going forward. Make Your Resume Private If you found copies of your resume on the internet, you may be able to hide them without totally deleting them. With some job sites, especially those that have a networking component, you may want to leave your resume online, but limit who can see it. Check the privacy settings. You may be able to change your resumes visibility from public to limited or private. How to Delete Your Resume If youâve decided that you do want your resume deleted, log in to the sites where you posted it and delete or remove your resume. If you dont remember your usernames and passwords, follow the instructions on the page for retrieving a forgotten username or a lost password. It only takes a few minutes to fix, but note that youâll also need to know what email you used when you created the job site accounts. Once youâve logged into the site, you should be able to find a link to your resume and it should be easy to delete. If you canât figure it out, look for a âHelpâ link where you can search for instructions, or a âContact Usâ page and send a message to the websiteâs support team who can help you delete your resume. Update Your Account Information While you are checking around for your resume, take the time to update your online career-related accounts. You never know when you might need them in the future. If you have a LinkedIn profile take the time to update it with your latest employment information. If you an online version of your resume, and you want to keep the account, take the time to make sure that all the information is current.

18 words and phrases smart people never include on their resumes
18 words and phrases smart people never include on their resumes 18 words and phrases smart people never include on their resumes While it can be tempting to load a bunch of jargon and glowing language on your resume, there are certain terms and phrases that you should avoid. So, without further ado:Donât use these 18 words and phrases on your resumeBack away slowlyâ¦1) Go-getterDo you really think that bragging is the way to a recruiterâs heart? A 2014 CareerBuilder survey of HR and hiring supervisors found that 27% chose this word as one to steer clear of. 2) Team playerOk, isnât that your job? This isnât doing very much in the evidence department. The same CareerBuilder survey found that 15% picked this word as a no-go. 3) SynergyThis is on our list of annoying work phrases for a reason. And the same CareerBuilder survey found that 22% chose this word as a bad option.4) Thought leadershipThis features such awkward, vague wording. A Grammarly blog post features this word on its list of ones to avoid.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Sign up for Morning Motivation!Itâs our friend ly Facebook ? that will send you a quick note every weekday morning to help you start strong. Sign up here by clicking Get Started!5) SeasonedThis word also shows up in the Grammarly blog post: ââShow, donât tellâ is the golden rule.â 6) Highly qualifiedAgain, you should let your resume speak for itself. A Robert Half blog post says you shouldnât use this word on yours, for just that reason. If youâre actually highly qualified, that will come through - saying it may be considered evidence that you are actually not. 7) LoyalThis one on the MediaBistro list also looks like youâre bragging, but not in a good way. Mitchell Langbert, associate professor of business management at Brooklyn College, told MediaBistro that the words on this list are used too frequently. 8) Value addWhat? This is dense jargon that doesnât explain how you contributed to professional efforts, and is featured on the MediaBistro list. 9) Go-to-personMediaBistro features this word, whic h is conversational enough, but doesnât illustrate what youâre trying to communicate in concrete terms. 10) Bottom-lineMediaBistro also features this word, which is pure jargon. 11) Hard-workingIf youâre really hard-working, your resume will reflect this.A FlexJobs post by Kat Boogaard features this word. She writes: âHiring managers are going to bank on the fact that - if you get the job - youâre going to roll up your sleeves and put your all into it. Thereâs no need to explicitly state that on your resume.â 12) Detail-orientedMonster Senior Editor Charles Purdy features this in the publication, writing that this should be a given. And thatâs true. This isnât something you should have to state on your resume. 13) ProactiveThis is also featured in Monster, and Purdy writes that your resume should demonstrate this without you having to say it. 14) On timeGlassdoor features this in a post because this is also something that is simply not impressive. It should be a given. 15) Canât or wonâtGlassdoorâs post shows that these words wonât draw the right kind of attention to your resume. 16) Due to the fact thatâ¦Chrissy Scivicque, a career coach, writer, trainer, and author of EatYourCareer.com, writes in U.S. News World Report that this phrase, along with others, fall into the category of âtoo many words,â and that you should write âbecauseâ or âandâ instead. 17) ObsessiveA LinkedIn post by author, speaker, and business, technology, and data expert Bernard Marr mentions that this isnât a good word to use because it isnât actually positive.Including it could also make you seem like an office martyr. 18) IntelligentThe same LinkedIn post illustrates that this doesnât make you look good, and that thereâs a difference between âbeingâ this way and âsayingâ that you are.Have enough confidence in your ability to show the recruiter your smarts in other ways.More from Ladders

Office Politics - Get Ahead Without Playing Dirty
Office Politics - Get Ahead Without Playing Dirty Office Politics - Get Ahead Without Playing Dirty The term office politics is usually associated with the concept of getting ahead at work by using cut-throat tactics. Another way of looking at it, however, makes it seem a bit less unsavory. Rather than thinking of office politics as climbing the corporate ladder by stepping on other peoples hands on the rungs below, we can instead define it as advancing in ones career by knowing how to navigate an organizations political structure gracefully. Dont Play Dirty Using office politics to trample people will cause nothing but strife in your workplace. Playing dirty to get ahead will irritate your coworkers, leaving you isolated, and it is nearly impossible to do your job without your coworkers support. Even if its possible to make it to the top, no one will be there to enjoy it with you. It is entirely unnecessary- and self-defeating- to play dirty. Putting all your energy into using underhanded tactics to get ahead will cause you to lose focus on doing your job well. It will be almost impossible to accomplish anything worthwhile and will diminish your opportunity to impress your boss. Rather than using energy to dream up cut-throat ways to get ahead at work, instead use it to learn some rules that will help you make the best of office politics. Rules for Using Office Politics Make sure to understand your organizations formal and informal hierarchies. While every entity has an official organizational chart, there is also an unofficial structure at play. For example, according to the written chain of command, the vice president in charge of your division may appear to make all the decisions. In reality, it may be her second in command who does.Apprise higher-ups of your accomplishments. Often people are afraid to toot their own horns because it feels like they are bragging. However, if you dont let those who are in charge know about what youve been doing, who will? When it comes time for them to make decisions about who to promote, they should know who you are and what you have contributed to the companys bottom line. Also, be congenial and congratulate your coworkers on their achievements. Be kind to your bosss administrative assistant or secretary. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it can also affect your success. He or she has the power to grant access to your boss and may have influence over some of his or her decisions.Respect your coworkers. Like you, most of the people with whom you work want to do a good job. A pleasant environment makes it easier for everyone to achieve their goals as well as the organizations goals. When employees work together, it does more for an employers bottom line than when individual workers look out only for their own best interests. Learn how to deal with annoying coworkers. There are a variety of personality types in every workplace and, unfortunately, not all are going to be pleasant. Knowing how to deal with even the most difficult colleagues will make your life easier and help you avoid trouble.Never spread gossip, but pay attention to everything you hear. While some of it will be false, quite a few things will be accurate, or at least have a grain of truth to them. Dont act on anything until you know it is true, but have a strategy in the works. Avoid becoming the subject of gossip at work. It can damage your reputation and, subsequently, your career, if your boss makes decisions based on it. Keep personal information to yourself, or at least dont share it with anyone who is untrustworthy.Dont offend anyone by discussing controversial topics. Among these topics are religion and politics.Lose your negative attitude at work. Instead of complaining about problems, find ways to fix them. Bring your valid complaints, along with your suggestions for how to make improvements, to those who have the power to make a change. It will allow your superiors to see you as a proactive employee instead of one who complains just for the sake of complaining.

There is not just one normal way to retire from work
There is not just one normal way to retire from work There is not just one normal way to retire from work Why be normal, you might have asked yourself on occasion. Turns out, with retirement at least, thereâs really no such thing. What you might think of as the ânormalâ way of retiring - leaving full-time work at a traditional retirement age and never working again - isnât that common after all. Only 37% of U.S. workers retire from a full-time job and stay retired, according to a recent study, focused on people in their mid-50s through age 71, by the Rand Corporation, a nonprofit research organization.Meanwhile, about 14% of people âretireâ to a part-time job. Another 17% quit their full-time job and retire, only to return to the workforce some time later, according to the study, which was based on data on 2,920 people who were surveyed over 14 years by the University of Michiganâs national Health and Retirement Study.About 26% of people continue to work, either full time or part time, past age 70, the study found.âIn the U.S., nontraditional paths are very common - onl y around a third of people are doing this traditional retirement,â says Peter Hudomiet, an associate economist at the Rand Corporation and co-author of the report.Rick Kahler, a certified financial planner and founder of Kahler Financial Group in Rapid City, South Dakota, isnât surprised by the findings.âIâve had clients quit and go back in two years,â Kahler says. âThey get bored. At first itâs usually great because itâs like being on vacation, but for some people thatâs not really sustainable. Ultimately, a person that goes back probably didnât visualize or think through fully what retirement would be like.âIn other cases, a significant life event - such as a spouseâs death - or financial difficulties might play a part in people returning to the workforce.Personality plays a partThe study also looked at whether our personalities might affect our retirement decisions. A clear link was found between being extroverted and staying in the workforce longer, in a part-time job, even after controlling for other factors.âWe saw that extroverts were more likely to work longer, but only in part-time jobs,â Hudomiet says. (The Health and Retirement Study asks people to self-report their personality type, based on responses to a series of questions.)Of course, many different factors go into determining how and when we retire. The three strongest predictors of people taking the traditional retirement path, Hudomiet says, are: Wealth. The more money you have, the earlier you will retire, on average. Health. If you have health issues, youâre more likely to retire and not return to work. A traditional pension. People with old-school pensions are likelier than others to retire and not return to work. What this means for your retirement outlookUnfortunately, no study is going to forecast your future retirement path for you. But this research shows how various factors can affect retirement timing. Here are some steps you can take to determine your retirement timeline:Check up on your savings. While there are lots of nonfinancial questions to consider before you retire, itâs also true - obviously - that finances are a huge factor in how and when youâll retire. See if youâre on track with a retirement calculator.Know what you want. Retirement is about a lot more than just money. Before you retire, figure out your goals and plans. âActually write out what you will be doing,â Kahler says. âWhat would a normal day, a normal week, a normal month look like? This forces someone to actually put pen to paper as to how a day looks.â Read more about retirement planning at any age.Talk with your spouse. It sounds obvious, perhaps, that youâd talk about retirement with your part ner. But Kahler says one of the biggest hurdles for couples is when one spouse is suddenly home all the time. âPeople make assumptions without gathering the facts,â he says. âWhat is the other person thinking? Do they even think the spouse will be home all day? Does the spouse assume something else? Does the spouse even know theyâre serious about retiring?â Talk together about how life is going to look when one or both of you is retired.Consider backup plans. You might plan to work full time until age 70, but what if you change your mind down the road, or your health deteriorates to the extent that you canât work anymore? One idea is to trim expenses now so you can hike your savings rate and improve your retirement outlook. Other potential backup plans include moving to a less-expensive locale in retirement, taking out a reverse mortgage, or figuring out other ways to cut costs or boost income, such as taking in a roommate.Prepare for major change. Retirement is âa big deal,â Kahler says. âSome people are really ready and handle it fine, but most people find the adjustment a little more daunting than they imagined,â he says. âWe tell people: Start preparing two or three years before.âAndrea Coombes is a writer at NerdWallet. An Overview of Major U.S. Brick-and-Mortar Bookstores
An Overview of Major U.S. Brick-and-Mortar Bookstores An Overview of Major U.S. Brick-and-Mortar Bookstores Brick-and-mortar bookstores are booksellers that have a physical retail presence, whether a freestanding building or a store in a shopping mall. Brick-and-Mortar Bookstores Are Important to Book Marketing For centuries, bookstores were the main centers of commerce for the bookselling industry and book-buying public. Now, while some consumer dollars have shifted away from print books to e-books, bookstores remain hubs for those who like the feel of holding a book in their hands and browsing the stacks to see before they buy. Therefore, despite Amazon.coms domination of online retail bookselling and digital book sales, bookstores remain a critical player in the book publishing industry. Below are the major bookstores in the United States. Brick-and-mortar stores promote books in numerous ways, including: Author readings and signingsPromotional signage Point-of-purchase promotion, such as newsletters, bookmarks and bagsOn-table promotion - these feature seasonal, holiday or category-specific books.Endcap promotions - these are the books displayed thematically at the end of a row of books. Handselling - that is, when the staff at a bookseller personally recommends a book to a customer. Note that many of these promotions are funded by the publisher by way of cooperative advertising funds. Major Bookstore Chains The major bookstore chains are especially important to publishers and authors for their potential ability to buy and sell large quantities of new books and to stock backlist sellers, as well as their ability to promote books to the book-buying public through chain-wide bookstore promotions. Barnes Noble The chain, started by Len Riggio when he was still a college bookstore manager, is arguably the largest and most forward-thinking chain bookseller in the nation. Early in its history, Barnes Noble differentiated itself with a number of bookselling innovations including television advertising, âvalueâ pricing, publishing proprietary books and deep discounting of bestsellers. It has remained on the forefront of bookselling in all its iterations, including online and with e-books thanks to the Nook e-reader. The Barnes Noble Bookseller chain operates approximately 630 brick-and-mortar retail bookstores in regional shopping malls, major strip centers and freestanding locations. Starting in 2016, BN began to further leverage the power of its brick-and-mortar stores by offering promotional inclusion for self-published books that hit a certain threshold of BN ebook sales. Books-A-Million Books-A-Million (or BAM, as it is often referred to) is based in Birmingham, Ala., and operates approximately 260 stores in 32 states. The chain was founded in 1917 as a street corner newsstand in Florence, Ala., Since the closing of the Borders Group bookstore chain, it has been the second largest brick-and-mortar book retailer in the United States. Borderâs Group The acknowledged originator of the book âsuperstoreâ concept and once the second-largest bookstore chain in the U.S., the Borders Group was a publicly held bookstore chain that operated Borders superstores and Waldenbooks Specialty Retail segment stores. This includes Waldenbooks, Borders Express and Borders airport stores. Lagging behind on the digital revolution, the last Borders store closed in Sept. 2011. Major Independent Bookstores Major brick-and-mortar booksellers arent limited to bookstore chains. Throughout the United States, there are a number of major independent booksellers, most with one or a few outlets, too few or too localized to be considered âchain bookstores.â These independents booksellers are influential in the publishing industry not only because of their ability to move quantities of books relative to many other independent bookstores, but because of their great reputations in their respective communities, the loyalty of their customer base and the business savvy of their ownership, who have continued to be committed to bookselling through a tough and volatile business landscape. Some major independents in the United States include: Book Soup in West Hollywood, Calif.Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle, Wash.Square Books in Oxford, Miss.Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Kentucky and OhioNorthshire Bookstore in Sarasota Springs, N.Y.Powellâs Books in Portland, Ore.R.
